Walmart’s Bold Leap into AI Shopping: Buying Directly Through ChatGPT

Walmart announced a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI. The collaboration allows U.S. customers, and soon Sam’s Club members, to browse, select, and complete purchases entirely within ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI. No more switching apps, no endless scrolling through product pages, just a simple conversation that ends with “buy” and your items on the way.
The feature leverages OpenAI’s Instant Checkout tool, introduced shortly before the Walmart deal. Shoppers can now ask ChatGPT things like “Find me affordable workout clothes for under $50” or “Restock my pantry with low-sodium snacks and paper towels,” receive tailored recommendations with images and details, and finalize the transaction right in the chat interface. Walmart handles fulfillment through its existing logistics network, while payments flow securely.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon described the shift as moving beyond the traditional “search bar and long list of item responses” to a more intuitive, multimedia, and personalized experience. The initial rollout focused on a vast range of Walmart’s assortment, including apparel, electronics, household goods, packaged foods, and third-party marketplace items. At the same time, fresh groceries were notably excluded at launch to preserve the retailer’s core in-store strengths.

The feature continues rolling out and evolving. Multi-item carts, broader product categories, and international availability are on the horizon. Whether it becomes the default way millions shop, or remains a novelty for the tech-curious, one thing is clear: the line between chatting with an AI and handing over your credit card has officially blurred. The future of retail may no longer start with “Add to cart.” It might begin with four simple words: “Hey ChatGPT, shop for me.
