Amazon Is Shutting Down Freevee Streaming Service

Amazon Freevee is shutting down. The company is phasing out the free streaming service over the next few weeks in the US, UK, Germany, and Austria. While the platform will be gone, its content will migrate to Prime Video.

This move comes after Amazon introduced an ad-supported tier to Prime Video earlier this year. Many speculated that Freevee would be discontinued as it overlapped with Prime Video’s ad-supported content.

What happens to Freevee content?

  • Prime Video: Freevee content will be available on Prime Video, labeled as “Watch for Free.” This means non-Prime members can still access select Freevee Originals and other content without a subscription.
  • Prime Video Ads: Freevee content may have ads, similar to the ad-supported tier of Prime Video.

Why is Amazon shutting down Freevee?

  • Simplification: Amazon aims to streamline its video offerings, making Prime Video a one-stop shop for both ad-supported and subscription content.
  • Ad-supported revenue: The company likely sees more potential in monetizing its content through Prime Video’s ad-supported tier.

What does this mean for viewers?

  • Free content: Non-Prime members will still have access to a selection of free content on Prime Video.
  • Prime Video experience: Prime members will see Freevee content integrated into their existing Prime Video experience.
While the Freevee brand is disappearing, its content will remain accessible to viewers.

This move aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy to consolidate its streaming services and maximize revenue from its content library.
