Masks Won’t Protect You From Viruses

Due to mask not being made to be a hand and glove fit to someone’s face, it leaves opportunities for the viruses to possibly get into your respiratory system.

A traditional general face mask like you might use for construction in your house is not going to protect you against coronavirus or other respiratory infections, it’s not designed to filter those particles and you don’t get a tight seal around your face. Particles can come in on the sides and underneath and be inhaled and you can still get exposed.” – Dr. Meghan McGinty, PhD, affiliate assistant professor, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, University of Washington School of Public Health

Wearing A Mask May Lead To Hypoxemia

Hypoxemia is an abnormally low concentration of oxygen in the blood. By wearing a mask you can end up with exhaled CO2 getting trapped beneath the surgical face mask.

“The effect was more prominent in surgeons over 35 years of age. This indicates that some level of silent hypoxia does occur due to wearing a surgical mask.” – Dr. Dimitar Marinov MD, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor at the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria

Wear A Mask At Home

For people who live in a home with people whose immune system is compromised or live with an elderly person, some doctors believe you should wear a mask while in the home.

“If you live in a multi-generational home with someone who’s elderly with medical problems, they’re at risk, this infection is everywhere now. So if you work in an area where you have a lot of person contact, you could potentially bring that infection home.” – Dr. Jeffrey Hines with Wellstar Health System
