Walmart is ending one of the longest holdouts in American retail. Starting Monday, August 24, 2026, the company will begin accepting Tap to Pay at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations across the United States.
What Shoppers Can Expect
According to Walmart’s official announcement, customers and members can check out using an “eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch.” They can also add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards to their digital wallets for easier use.
Existing payment options remain fully available. Cash, traditional credit and debit cards, and Walmart Pay will continue to work as usual. At Sam’s Club, members can still use Scan & Go to skip traditional checkout lines entirely.
Walmart framed the change as giving customers more choice. “We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them,” the company said. “Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered.”
A Long Time Coming
Walmart had resisted contactless payments for more than a decade. While most major retailers adopted Apple Pay and Google Pay years ago, Walmart stuck with its own systems. The company previously backed the failed CurrentC mobile payment consortium in the mid-2010s and later promoted Walmart Pay as its preferred mobile option.
Analysts and industry observers long pointed to data control and customer relationship management as key reasons for the resistance. By steering shoppers toward its own app and payment tools, Walmart retained richer purchase data and kept the transaction experience inside its ecosystem. Hardware upgrade costs across thousands of stores also played a role.
That stance left Walmart as one of the last major holdouts. Competitors including Target, Kroger, Home Depot, and even some smaller chains had already added tap-to-pay support. Walmart had accepted Apple Pay in its Canadian stores since 2020, making the U.S. delay especially noticeable to shoppers.
