The Personal Information Protection Commission has issued fines to Google and Meta for a combined $72 million for privacy violations. Google was fined $49.68 million while Meta was fined $22.11 million.

Google and Meta allegedly didn’t obtain legal consent from users who visit their platforms. The Personal Information Protection Commission discovered that Google set the default option for data collection as “agree” when users signed up for its online services.

PIPC came to the conclusion that Meta form is too difficult to understand for users to know what information users are giving.
