Cracker Barrel Old Country Store announced that Julie Masino will step down as chief executive officer and board member, effective August 10, 2026. She will remain with the company in an advisory role through October 9, 2026, to support a smooth leadership transition.
David Deno, a veteran restaurant and retail executive, has been appointed as the next CEO and will join the board on the same date. Deno most recently served as CEO of Bloomin’ Brands from 2019 to 2024. Earlier in his career, he held senior roles at Best Buy, Yum! Brands, Pizza Hut, and began in the industry at Burger King. He currently serves on the boards of Krispy Kreme and Panera Brands.
In a statement, Independent Chairman Carl Berquist said the board conducted a comprehensive succession planning and search process. “He brings decades of experience across the restaurant and retail industries, with a strong track record of leading businesses through growth and a demonstrated commitment to operational excellence, guest experience, and team member engagement. We are confident David is the right leader to continue building on the Cracker Barrel legacy, drive further positive momentum operationally and financially, and create sustainable value for our shareholders.”
Berquist also thanked Masino for her leadership and commitment, noting the company’s appreciation for her partnership during the transition as it continues focusing on guests, employees, and strategic priorities.
Shares had fallen sharply amid the controversy but recovered substantially in 2026, with the company reporting improved recent results and raising its full-year outlook. Masino survived an activist investor challenge in November 2025, when shareholders voted to retain her, though one board member stepped down.
The leadership change comes as Cracker Barrel continues working to stabilize operations and rebuild momentum after the turbulent period. The company operates more than 660 restaurants across 43 states, known for its country-store atmosphere, Southern-inspired menu, and retail offerings.
