New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to cut the budget for the NYPD by $1 billion. He plans to use the money he takes from the police budget and use on youth communities.

“Over this weekend, City Hall here, my office, presented to the City Council a plan that would achieve a billion dollars in savings for the NYPD, and shift resources to young people, to communities, in a way that would help address a lot of the underlying issues that we know are the cause of so many problems in our society,” – Bill de Blasio

De Blasio believes redistribution of NYPD funds will lead the way for police reform in New York City. He also believes that this will not affect public safety.

The police union believes this budget cut will lead to layoffs and fewer cops on the street.
